I had the pleasure today in showing a delegation of teachers, Brothers and administrators from Fiji around our school. They were interested in the way in which we are using technology in the school, and many seem to be these days.
I like to tour people around using a ‘time travel’ approach. In effect the [...]

When I dropped a 10th grade class earlier in the year, as our EdTech needs grew, I felt really bad about no longer working with the IST class who I’d pioneered most of my Web2.0 ideas with the year before. When I interviewed Suzanna, she hadn’t used Web2.0 in her classrooms. In fact in her [...]

I’ve been in a few online sessions recently, and one of the questions that teachers who have figured out what Web2.0 is in comparison to using regular unleaded, is this. “I want to start blogging with my students – how should I start?.
Right up front, let me say that if you are going to start [...]

Konrad Glogowski’s great presentation at NECC talked about the idea of students having a ‘third place’.
The third place is a term used in the concept of community building to refer to social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home and the workplace. In his influential book The Great Good Place, Ray Oldenburg [...]

As I come to the end of the week in Grand Rapids. There are many things that I’ve learned, and even more that I’ve unlearned about ‘what makes a great project based learning’ curriculum and EduTech.
Firstly, in order to learn how to teach teachers about PBL, you have to use the PBL process and tools [...]

I’ve started on the professional development with Quest Atlantis. Its a MUVE with a back story, that covers a range of KLA content with a strong ’social commitment’ theme.
It is designed for students 4th to 8th grade, and as a teacher allows a very comprehensive online way of managing students progress. Students are engaged [...]

After attending the Why and How of Web2.0. ItĀ gave a focus to the issues that as an Educational Technologist and parent – I face.
Once a teacher gets a lens to understand the SHIFT that Will (and others) talk about, they get all depressed, as the future looks bleak while they grapple with the enormity of [...]

We’ve noticed that our students are getting lost!
Navigating the campus is easy. Things are usually the same, buildings don’t appear and disappear that often. Our rooms have numbers so it’s pretty easy to locate the room that has their science lesson in it. We also have bell times.
Bell+local knowledge+subject=class.
This is something that they are [...]

Been busy this week going to some SL Edu events at Jokaydia and in-between, making some major upgrades to the space we share in Skoolaborate. Added some urban planning, deleted some ad-hock stuff and have been collaborating on developing new units of work. More images of the build [...]

Growing up online is a documentary, recently shown on SBS in Australia (though I think it was a re-run). It is a good resource to use in class as a discussion topic surrounding the read/write web. I didn’t show the second part of the film, which I felt was a little alarmist and biased – [...]
